Post-conference event – 24-25 June 2024
The post-conference event was a busy day packed with interesting discussions, presentations, keynotes and panels. The organising committee would like to thank everyone who was there for making the day so successful.
We welcomed 60 academic and industry delegates from around the world to Kurrawa Surf Club on the Gold Coast to engage in an open dialogue about funding models in the news environment.
Richard Denniss kicked off the event at a dinner the night before with a talk that asked us to think about why we should think about alternative ways to pay for news.

Keynotes on the day included Professor Kristy Hess, who presented us with five provocative ideas about local news, and Phil Napoli whose presentation gave insight into the funding gap for local news in the US.
The two panels included leading scholars from around the world who discussed media systems in Norway, Canada, South Korea and Australia, and industry experts who shared their expertise in the Australian media ecology.
Lightning round participants presented research ranging from bargaining codes to new business models from the perspective of a broad range of countries including South Korea, Iran, Greece, South Africa, Singapore and Australia.
Several of the lightning presenters have kindly agreed to share their powerpoint slides.
Peng Hwa Ang: The end of news platformisation? Global trends in news dissemination on Facebook after the news bargaining codes
Josie Vine & Tim Marjoribanks: Community-run hyperlocals: Sustainability, professionalisation, citizen-owned structures and public interest ethos
Sacha Molitorisz & Monica Attard: Is Australia’s news media bargaining code a blueprint for saving journalism?
Chris Hall: Youtuber business model for journalism
Chris has also shared a Youtube video that explains this model.
We would also like to remind you that a report will be developed that will include recommendations. The final session of the day generated a lot of strong ideas and we will be collating them shortly and will send it on when it is ready.
